Message is: I was a 16 year old penpal with Pfc. Larry E. Schoettle, US55865938, from March to September 1967. I have always wondered what happened to him because his last letter was dated September 12, 1967. Facts that I have of his life: He was from Detriot, Michigan, and was born in 1946. He had a brother in the Navy who was stationed in Taiwan. Larry entered the army Dec 13, 1965, and was stationed in Texas before departing for Vietnam on Aug 29, 1966 (arriving there Sept 15, 1966). He spent 6 days in Hawaii around April 8, 1967. He was moved from the 70th Med Bn. to 85th evac hosp sometime in May 1967. He was scheduled to leave Vietnam August 28 1967 but "applied to be extended here for twenty days so I will be eligible for an early separation when I return to the States. If it is approved I will be leaving Vietnam around Sept 17 instead of Aug. 28." He was supposed to leave Vietnam from Cam Ranh Bay. I have always wanted to know if he made it back safely. I kept all his l! etters and now with the miracle of the web, I look forward to finding out what happened to him. I hope that you can help me.

Cav and assigned to Task Force Salvo under the Command of John Paul Vann who was KIA during the Easter Offensive of 1972. Nobody beleives we were there. We were very near Tanh Canh/Dak To when it got overrun April 24th, 1972 by NVA and T-54/PT-76 tanks. We talked for a few minutes then my mom got on the subject of my dad wanting to find one of his buddies from the Vietnam War. She didn't have a lot of information but I am going to try to see what I can do to get started on a search. Although it might take years to find him I am determined to do everything I can to help my dad find his friend. This is what I do know about my dadand the years he served. My dad was in the service in 1965-1968. He got out of the military as an E5 and one of his units was with the 82nd Airborne. My mom did say he was stationed in Fort Bragg, North Carolina and Fort Lennerwood, Missouri. I am not sure exactly where they met but I do know that my dad considered him to be a like a brother. My mom did mention that last they knew he was from Barberton, Ohio. My family lives in Ohio. They have lived there for many y! ears. Message is: Considering you wrote back to an eleven year old school girl right after the Tet offensive in 1968, I'm not sure you'd remember me or even your task or its absurdity ( I must have asked "What's it like being there? I know I asked "What to you makes an ideal girl?") I wrote to you as part of a school project. I imagine you, a more recent arrival and a private first class, drew the short straw and were told to write back. I am writing now for several reasons. Partly, because I've kept your letter tucked away with other things from my youth I could never seem to let go of. Partly, because I finally found the nerve to see if you were among those killed. Mostly, because I have begun teaching O'Brien's "The Things they Carried," and John Irving's "Hamgurger Hill" to my high school seniors. Foolishly, I mentioned my limited memories of "Vietnam the 60s" to my students who wanted mostly to know if you made it back. I couldn't say, so they gave me a homework assignment. This is it. Your reply letter began with an apology for "waiting so long to write, but you had been in the field since the 13th of Feb." I'll end mine with an apology for "not writing soooner." I'd like to send a copy of your letter back to you at the very least and tell my students you made it back.
